The Pakleni Islands are the tiny archpelago in the vicinity of Hvar, consisting of about 20 islets opposite the town of Hvar. The archipelago extends along the south side of Hvar and the name of the archipelago comes from the word "paklina", a resin once used to coat ships.
The Pakleni Islands offer small, secluded beaches, deserted coves and sun-drenched hills.
The closest island, directly opposite the Town of Hvar is Jerolim that got its name from a church that no longer exists on the island. The island is known for its rocky beaches that are favourite among the naturists. Hot spot for the naturists are also beaches on the island of Marinkovac.
The biggest and most beautiful island is Sveti Klement (who is, actually, the protector of sea-men) or, as it is sometimes called, Veliki Otok (Big Island) that is known for it Palmižana hamlet. It has been known since the turn of the 20th century when, in the bay of Vinogradišće the family of the botanist Eugen Meneghello began to build summer houses and also to plant trees. Nowadays, Palmižana is an arboretum with tourist facilities. The interesting data is that prehistproc stone tumuli that were found suggest the possible use of the island as a burial site.
