Pula to Plitvice

Postby Kalli on Mon Aug 21, 2006 10:21 pm

We want to make our way to Plitvice National Park in the space of two or three days. Can anyone with experience recommend a route, and places to stay along the way? I can't quite work out whether it would be best to hop across the peninsula by ferry via Losinj, or to take a bus or train via Rijeka. Can anybody offer advice?

Thank you!

I think there are buses from Pula down towards Sibenik, or Zadar, from either you can travel on into Plitvice.

If you drive, you'll need to go via Rijeka in any case. From Rijeka, you can go down the coast road via Senj and Karlobag, you'll see the dramatic mountainous northern coastline (and pass through the town of Ribaric, prepare to be under-whelmed). Go inland (east) at Karlobag and drive via Gospic and Bunic then turn north to Plitvice on the old road between Knin and Karlovac. You'll see some sights which will live with you forever, good, desoloate and VERY bad.

DO NOT miss out on the Plitvice lakes. It'll blow you away.... no pun intended.

From Slunj (which is idyllic in itself) right the way through Plitvice is interesting and pretty. Ribaric has it spot on with the Knin-Karlovac road, it's stunning and interesting from Knin to about Gracac, then there's the nothingness of Lika (which in itself is interesting).
