When arriving at Split airport is there a car hire company at the airport (or somewhere near) and do I have to arrange pickup beforehand or can I just get one when I arrive ?

There are several companies operating out of Split airport, but it is best to pre book as you will in most cases get a better rate and also ensure that there will be a car available for you.

The choice of who to use is a case of swings and roundabouts, the bigger companies mostly have a better coverage if you want to drop the car off elsewhere and their breakdown cover tends to be better, but the local companies are often cheaper with slightly older cars.

Be aware that Croatia is one of the most expensive places in Europe to rent a car and that if you can manage with public transprt you will save a great deal of money.

Very very expensive & limited availability
I would make sure I had pre-booked car hire than trying to hire in resort as they levy allsorts of extra insurances & charges.
We couldn't pre-book a car from the airport as the airport office closes at 9pm and we didn't arrive until after 10pm.
Ended up paying £65 for 1 day hire!

From my experience, It's better to use smaller Croat companies if price is your primary concern.

Try booking online with the big names and it's pretty expensive.
