Oh, I don't know. But I don't think so. Many people are strict Catholics in Croatia.

Filip do you know anything?

I took part to this gay week at Hvar from the 19th to the 26th of August and I must say that what all this discussion for me is a bit surrealistic....

Everybody is talking about this article showing a naked man in front of the church. Did anyone ask himself if this picture was a true one? If it was not a fake one, made by the newspaper itself for homophobic purposes. (it appears that the involved newspaper is owned by a man very near to the church). If a photographer could take this picture in the middle of the street with plenty of persons around, why couldn't the naked man get caught by the police? Where are the witnesses of this scene? Did they go to the police to make a statement? If this naked man really existed (and was not only a "creation" of the newspaper), what proves that he his gay? Are heterosexual people always saint people that never commit provocations ? What about the fact that I have seen heterosexual couples having sex at night on the rocky beach behind the port and in the small forest near to Veneranda discotheque: there could have been children or sensitive persons seeing these scenes....Why wasn't this considered as immoral by the same newspapers?

When reading all the reactions and comments about all these untrue articles and facts, I am really asking myself if I was at the same place as you during this period. The only provocation I have seen during my stay, is the daily provocation of homophobic medias with all these stupid articles, with one objective in mind: provocate incidents, between the local population and gay tourists. Unfortunately, Hvar people were intelligent enough to understand all this, and there was absolutely no incident, so that the group could spend a great holiday on the island and have a lot of fun and will of course not hesitate to come next year...

Now, a question from me: why are you asking yourself all these questions about gay tourists? (please don't answer to me that this is because they behave badly, I have already answered to this point...)

See you next year!

Seriously, have you seen lots of families in Hvar?

It seems like gays are not very "welcome" in Croatia.

Read this:

Gay tourists attacked in Croatia

A gay German couple traveling through the Croatian town of Split were attacked by unidentified assailants, police and local media reported on Friday.

The incident was the latest in a series of homophobic attacks on tourists along Croatia's popular Adriatic coast in recent months, Agence France-Presse reported.

The two German men, ages 20 and 39, were beaten late on Wednesday while walking on a street in Split, a police spokeswoman told AFP. The 39-year-old suffered serious injuries and needed medical treatment for a broken nose, she said.

According to local media, the two were holding hands when they were attacked. It was the fourth attack against gay and lesbian tourists in the Split area since July.

In the most serious incident, locals attacked two gay British men on the southern island of Hvar in mid July. One suffered a concussion and broken teeth, and the other had part of his ear bitten off.

This month, two local men assaulted a group of six Spanish women after the women swam naked and kissed on a public beach in Split.

According to AFP, Croatian society is still largely conservative, and the powerful Catholic Church has labeled homosexuality a "handicap" and "perversion".

The Balkan country has become a popular tourist destination in recent years, attracting 7.9 million visitors in the first eight months of the year, according to official figures. The country's population is 4.4 million.
