Lubenice is small place on the Island of Cres, more than 4000 years old. It is situated 378 meters above the sea level, on the rocky western side of the island, and has only around 40 residents (all of them over 65 years of age). The place´s name is rather funny, as it stands for “watermellons†in Croatian. However, it is probably derived from Latin word meaning “wintryâ€, due to the harsh winters with snow and strong wind that blows almost all the time. It is interesting to mention that the town was built as a Roman fortress.
In Lubenice you can visit one of the five churches, the oldest among whom is from the 15th century, and you can really experience an autochtonous lway of living. Also, if visiting in the summer, be sure to attend well-known classical music concerts.
There is a motel in Lubenice if you wish to spend your holidays there. However, the place is usually put on the map only as a day trip or excursion.
