Gay week in Hvar surprises Croatian tourists

Postby Alex* on Sat Aug 26, 2006 1:03 am

Tourists in Croatia's central Adriatic Hvar Island were startled by naked men in a main square and striptease in the streets during Gay Week, reports said.

Gay Week in the seaside resort began Monday when about 50 foreign homosexuals arrived in Hvar, the major town on the island, Zagreb's Vecernji List newspaper reported Tuesday.

Local organizers and foreign travel agencies condemned the incidents and said they were performed by gays who were vacationing on the island, off the central Adriatic city of Split.

The person who walked naked outside the cathedral has nothing to do with our group. Many of us are Catholics who will never do such a thing, said one of the organizers who identified himself as Eduardo.

Evelyn Birot of Paris' Happy Gay Holidays agency said she had no disruptive incidents among her group.

Hi Alex,

it's a pity some people always interrupt demonstrations with their annoying behaviour. This also casts a cloud on the gay week and I think it will aggravate prejudices against gay people.

Sorry, but I have a here a conservative opinion. Families travel from far away to such places in order to relax und to enjoy the sea. This is more a provocation and it will lead to the fact that people won't travel again to Hvar.

my opinion is:
Is not ok, that a person walked naked outside the cathedral. I cannot accept this, too.

But one of the organizers said, that the naked man has nothing to do with the 50 homosexuals.

So, why walked this person naked through the lanes?

In my opinion, this person wanted to interrupt the gay week and aggravate prejudices.

Would be interesting to know if croatian homosexuals also took part in the gay week. Is it only this group of 50 foreign homosexuals?

I think Croatia is more than a tourists' resort, isn't it? The gays should have the right to demonstrate and it's clear that there'll always be some people who feel offended even if they don't run around naked...

Have you heard about Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Stuttgart, Germany? It's a gay procession every year. It's really nice. But every year a few people feel offended. I don't know why. Maybe because of prejudices or their religion.

Why they should have the right to demonstrate?

Because they are a minority and have to struggle against prejudices.

But the main question is:

Are there 50 foreign homosexuals or Croatian homosexuals??

This is an interresting discussion.

Do you know about the situation of homosexuals in Croatia? Are they accepted by the public?
