Fazana

General information

Image

Fazana used to be the fishermen's port of the Fazana Strait. Today it is known as a seaside resort and the departure point of boats for Brijuni National Park. The town entered the history of tourism roughly at the same time as Brijuni, because it used to serve as the port of Brijuni. In the surroundings of Fazana there are many vineyards and orchards, which add to the picturesque aspect of this Mediterranean town.

Events: Pilchard Feast (in July), Fazana Night (in August).

FAZANA, a town, small port and fishermen's centre in the south-western part of the western Istrian coast in the Fazana Strait, 8 km northwest of Pula, population 2,716. It is located on a low part of the coast, well protected from the sea by Brijuni Islands. Gentle hills in the interior are under orchards, vineyards and olive-groves; the landscape is dominated by pine forests. Chief occupations include fishing, fish-processing and building of smaller fishing boats. Glass-processing is also well-developed. The town is located on the regional road Vodnjan - Fazana - Veli Vrh - Pula.

In 1379, the fleets of Venice (under the command of Vittoro Pisani) and Genoa (under the command of Luciano Doria) fought a battle in the Fazana Strait. Although Doria got killed, the Genoese overcame the Venetians. The church of St. Elys from the 6th century was built on the foundations of a late antique villa. The one-nave church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was built in the 14th century; it features well-preserved frescoes from the 15th century.

The parish church of Sts. Cosmas and Damian is an extended Gothic structure with the remains of Renaissance frescoes in the sacristy from the 16th century. The canvas, The Last Supper, is a work by Juraj Ventura from Zadar (1578). - In the Ribnjak cove (Valbandon-Florianum), 2 km south of Fazana, remains of a summer mansion (villa) from the 1st century have been discovered, luxuriantly decorated with mosaics.
