Savudrija
The old fisher village Savudrija is situated at the north western coast of Istria. At this green part of the coast the forests touch the sea shore. It is said that at this very spot the Venetians defeated the combined navies of Friedrich Barbarossa and Pope Alexander III.
Savudrija is most of all known because of its light tower that was built in de 19th century and has long been the largest at the Adriatic coast. The light tower functions until this day.
In the little settlement of Zambratija, each August a festival in honour of St. Maria Magdalena takes place. One of the remarkable sights are the fishing boats that are hoisted up on a construction of wood by fishermen, similar to the way lifeboats are hoisted up at cruise ships.
